Family of the four Magellans goes on a camping trip, planning to be home before the full moon but get stuck in a storm. A werewolf kills the eldest Magellan, the boys' father; Romulus steps in to fight, to protect his mom and brother. But the werewolf bites Romulus and throws him aside, kills the mother and bites Remus as well before park rangers scare it off/kill it.
Later, newly-turned Romulus moves Remus to New Orleans, looking for a better place to take care of his brother - who insists he doesn't need caring for - and tries to find a way to keep living with the curse. He finds the currently dominant pack of New Orleans, the Argyris, but the Alpha outright will not have anything to do with them, claiming that their blood is impure and that he cannot defile his people by helping them.
Romulus takes this quite seriously and works into researching the curse.. along the way he finds three other werewolf males, also spurned by the pureblood fanatic, equally upset and lost. Fearful that the dominant pack is seeking to take him down, they have started to attempt to turn humans to form a potential army of werewolves.
